Our client is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting function for a general contractor/subcontractor type business in the South Bend / Mishawaka area.
This is a high-impact role for someone who enjoys building structure, improving processes, and working closely with operations in a project-based environment. The Controller will oversee a small accounting team, strengthen month-end and year-end close, improve job-level financial visibility, and help bring more consistency to reporting, billing, and overall financial discipline.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly and year-end close process
- Oversee general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Manage and develop a small office accounting team
- Prepare and maintain WIP schedules and related entries
- Partner with operations on job costing, cost-to-complete reviews, and margin analysis
- Oversee billing, collections, retainage, and change-order tracking
- Review payroll, union reporting, and related compliance items
- Assist with lender reporting and short-term cash flow forecasting
- Help improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and overall financial visibility
Qualifications
- Strong construction accounting experience required
- WIP, job costing, progress billing/billing oversight, month-end close, financial reporting
- Ability to operate as a working Controller in a lean environment
- Comfortable partnering with both accounting and operations
- Strong process improvement mindset and ability to create structure
- Experience with payroll, union reporting, and project-based accounting is a plus
